For engineers & IT professionals: gadgets, employee shares and side projects in one record
This occupation page is for engineers, software developers, system administrators, data analysts and technology professionals. Your salary may include employee share income reported by your employer; the gadgets you buy are lifestyle relief; remote side projects — even paid in foreign currency — are Form B business income. ListBelanja reads the EA, converts foreign-currency invoices at the official rate on their date, works out the zakat rebate, and opens its tax engine to your own AI assistant.

Scenario: how it plays out
- Pick the Salaried employee persona on the "Who are you?" card; add Freelancer & SME if you take side projects.
- Scan the EA form — salary, allowances & employee share income as reported by your employer, PCB & EPF fill in; the PCB calculator shows the expected refund.
- Forward e-receipts for a laptop, phone, monitor & internet subscription to your receipt address — the AI matches them to that year's lifestyle relief and tracks the shared cap; certification course fees go to the education relief if they qualify.
- Side projects: register a Form B source, issue invoices (SST at the current rate, e-Invoice TIN), record money in — an invoice in dollars is converted at the official rate on its date. Tax season: the form box by box, zakat as a rebate.
What is usually relevant
- Lifestyle: a computer, smartphone, tablet, books & internet subscription — one cap shared by all items; Lifestyle — sports for sports equipment & fees.
- Education fees (self): a master's or a course in a field that qualifies under LHDN's conditions — not every vendor certification.
- PRS & deferred annuity, Life insurance & EPF, SOCSO / EIS contributions from statements & payslips; First home loan interest for a first home under its conditions.
- Employee share income (options, restricted units): an employment benefit your employer reports on the EA under LHDN's employee share scheme rules — the app uses the EA figure, it does not value the shares.
- Side projects: business expenses (software, cloud servers, domains, a computer through capital allowances, the internet share) are deducted from project income on Form B.
- Zakat paid (including through salary deduction) is a rebate that reduces tax down to zero — not a relief.
Records to keep
- The EA form & employee share scheme letters from your employer; payslips with zakat deductions.
- Gadget & subscription e-receipts in your name; course offer letter & fee receipts.
- Invoices you issue, money in (bank / payment platform statements), software & cloud service receipts for side projects.
- Zakat receipts from the zakat centre. Keep them 7 years — the audit pack is ready.

Frequently asked questions
Are employee shares (RSU/ESOS) taxed?
Employee share scheme benefits are employment income in the year LHDN's rules specify (usually when the shares vest or options are exercised), and your employer reports them on the EA form. The app reads the EA — it does not value your shares. For a later sale of the shares, ask LHDN about any capital gains tax that applies.
A laptop for working from home — a relief?
A personal computer qualifies under Lifestyle with a receipt in your name, sharing one cap with the phone, books & internet that year; the app shows the remaining cap before you buy. If the laptop is for side projects, it is a business asset through capital allowances — not both.
A project paid in USD — how is it reported?
As Form B business income in RM: the app converts each invoice & payment at the official rate on its date, keeps the rate used, and deducts the project expenses. Services to overseas clients are still reported in Malaysia if you are a tax resident.
