For retirees: still need to file? and the receipts that count for your children
This occupation page is for government & private-sector retirees, and the families who care for them. Retiring does not always mean no more tax: certain pensions are exempt, but rent, taxable dividends, part-time work or a small business are still reported. And your medical, medicine and care bills are a relief — for the child who pays them. ListBelanja answers "do I need to file?" with five questions, and keeps every receipt in one family record so your children claim it correctly.

Scenario: how it plays out
- Answer the "Do I need to file?" wizard (5 questions: income, PCB, other income, status, residence) — the app tells you whether a return is due, which form and when, using that year's LHDN rate table, rebates & statutory reliefs.
- Pick the Beginner or Family persona on the "Who are you?" card; an adult child invites you to the family group (or the other way round) — everyone logs in themselves, private receipts stay private.
- Pharmacy, clinic, hospital, health screening & care receipts — you or your child snap them, forward e-receipts or send via Telegram; the family tax optimiser suggests which child should claim.
- Renting out a house? Register a Rental source: rent in, assessment, repairs — HK-4 prepared. Tax season: Form BE or B box by box, or no form if the wizard confirms none is needed.
What retirees need to know
- An exempt pension (under LHDN's conditions, for example retirement at the compulsory age or on health grounds) and EPF withdrawals are not taxed — but if LHDN sends a form or a notice, respond through MyTax.
- Rent, taxable interest, taxable dividends, part-time work, consulting or a small business are still income — the wizard shows whether the total crosses the threshold that makes a return compulsory.
- Your own reliefs when you file: Serious illness, fertility, vaccination & dental, Medical check-up & mental health, Lifestyle, PRS & deferred annuity, Education & medical insurance; the personal rebate when chargeable income does not exceed RM35,000.
- Reliefs for the child who pays: Parents' medical & care — treatment, medicine, special care & daily assistance for parents, with receipts; Disability support equipment for supporting equipment.
- All caps & conditions come from the LHDN table for the receipt's year; the app shows the cap beside every receipt.
Records to keep
- Pension letters/statements & EPF withdrawal statements (to answer a notice, even when exempt).
- Clinic, hospital, pharmacy, health screening & care-centre receipts — in your name; the child who claims needs them.
- Tenancy agreement, assessment & repair receipts if a house is rented out.
- Keep them 7 years; the estate letter in the app records where everything is for your loved ones.

Frequently asked questions
I only receive a pension — do I need to file?
If your pension is exempt and you have no other taxable income, usually not — but the "Do I need to file?" wizard confirms it with that year's rules, and if LHDN sends you a form it must be answered on MyTax. ListBelanja is a record-keeping & calculation tool, not a tax agent; for complex cases ask LHDN.
My daughter pays my hospital bills — who claims?
The child who pays claims it under Parents' medical & care with supporting receipts, within LHDN's cap. Keep the receipts in the family group; the family tax optimiser suggests the split when several children share.
The inherited house is rented out — which form?
An individual's rental income goes on Form BE (or Form B if you also run a business), computed net of allowable expenses — assessment, quit rent, fire insurance, repairs. The Rental source in the app prepares HK-4 and the right form boxes; the For landlords page explains the details.
