How to register an income tax file (e-Daftar)
Short answer: LHDN registers a tax identification number (TIN) automatically for citizens and permanent residents aged 18 and above, using National Registration Department data — you only need to log in to MyTax. Everyone else, such as non-citizens and temporary residents, registers online with e-Daftar on MyTax, without visiting a counter.

Who needs a tax number (TIN)
According to LHDN, you need a TIN if you are:
- A single individual with employment income above RM34,001 a year (after EPF deductions).
- A married individual whose spouse does not work, with employment income above RM46,001 a year.
- Anyone running a business — even if it makes a loss.
- A new employee subject to PCB.
- Anyone with chargeable income.
- Anyone selling or buying real property.
Citizens & permanent residents: check and log in
If you are a citizen or permanent resident aged 18 and above, your TIN has already been registered automatically. Log in to MyTax with your MyKad number and follow the portal's instructions for first access — there is no separate application.
Everyone else: register with e-Daftar
- Open MyTax and choose e-Daftar.
- Fill in your personal details, address and source of income.
- Upload a copy of your passport or a related identity document (for example a visit pass or UNHCR card); temporary residents: a copy of MyKAS.
- Submit the application and keep the reference number shown.
- LHDN tells you your tax number once the application is processed.
After you get your tax number
- Collect Form EA from your employer and relief receipts throughout the year.
- File Form BE (employees) or Form B (business) before the deadline: Form BE 30 April, Form B 30 June.
Business or freelance income?
The same registration applies; you then file Form B and can deduct allowable business expenses. ListBelanja keeps personal and business receipts apart from day one.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to go to an LHDN office to register?
No. Citizens and permanent residents aged 18 and above are registered automatically; everyone else registers entirely online with e-Daftar on MyTax.
At what income do I need a tax number?
LHDN lists single individuals with employment income above RM34,001 a year (after EPF) and married individuals whose spouse does not work above RM46,001 a year — plus anyone in business, new employees subject to PCB and anyone with chargeable income.
What documents do I need?
For e-Daftar: a copy of your passport or a related identity document (non-citizens and non-permanent residents), or a copy of MyKAS (temporary residents). Citizens aged 18 and above don't need to apply. To file later: Form EA, your EPF statement and relief receipts.
I have two tax files — what should I do?
LHDN advises you to contact the HASiL office handling your tax file to update the status of those files.
I've worked for years but never filed — what should I do?
Check your tax number on MyTax and contact LHDN about the years not yet filed. Filing voluntarily is better than waiting for a notice.
