Supporting your parents: tax relief for their treatment and care — YA2026
Many children pay for their parents' clinic bills, medicine, dental care or a carer without realising it is one of the larger reliefs: Parents' medical & care, up to RM8,000 a year. On RM5,500 a month with RM6,500 of example receipts, this page shows how much tax that saves, which expenses qualify, and the proof LHDN expects.
In short: Without receipts, the YA2026 tax on RM5,500 a month is RM1,830; with RM6,500 of example receipts — including the parents' expenses — it becomes RM1,290, a saving of RM540. Your employer deducts about RM1,830 of PCB a year, so after filing with receipts you get a refund of about RM540.

The tax at different salaries in the same situation
| Monthly salary | Automatic reliefs | Tax, no receipts | Tax with receipts | Saved | PCB refund |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RM3,800 | 13,000 | 128 | 0 | 128 | 128 |
| RM5,500 | 13,000 | 1,830 | 1,290 | 540 | 540 |
| RM7,700 | 13,000 | 5,486 | 4,251 | 1,235 | 1,235 |
| RM11,000 | 13,000 | 14,150 | 12,525 | 1,625 | 1,625 |
Monthly salary × 12; the same example receipts at every level. Refund = the PCB your employer deducts (without receipts) versus the real tax with receipts — which is why keeping receipts brings money back.
Why the numbers come out this way
The Parents' medical & care relief covers medical treatment, special needs and care for parents (and grandparents) resident in Malaysia, capped at RM8,000 a year; some parts, such as a full medical check-up, carry their own sub-limit in LHDN's table. At RM5,500 a month your marginal rate is 6%, so every ringgit backed by a receipt cuts the tax by roughly 6 sen.
The spending must be evidenced — a receipt or invoice in your name or your parent's, and for treatment, a registered medical practitioner's confirmation that it was needed. Non-medical support (food, rent, pocket money) is not a relief; that is why the RM8,000 cap is rarely reached without organised records.
Tips for this situation
- Ask for the invoice in your name as the payer for every clinic visit, prescription, dental treatment and carer or care-centre fee for your parents.
- For a carer or care centre, keep the medical practitioner's letter confirming the need for care — LHDN may ask for it.
- Siblings who share the cost can each claim their own share — as long as each has receipts for their part.
- A parent's full medical check-up has its own sub-limit inside Parents' medical & care; your own check-up falls under Medical check-up & mental health (cap RM1,000).
How ListBelanja handles it for you
- Scan clinic, pharmacy and care-centre receipts as you pay — AI recognises parents' expenses and matches them to Parents' medical & care.
- The Reliefs tab shows the balance of the RM8,000 cap and its sub-limits, so you know when you have reached the maximum.
- The yearly audit pack gathers every receipt with its date and shop — organised proof if LHDN asks.
