The tax at different salaries in the same situation
| Monthly salary | Automatic reliefs | Tax, no receipts | Tax with receipts | Saved | PCB refund |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RM2,200 | 11,904 | 0 | 0 | 0 | – |
| RM3,200 | 13,000 | 0 | 0 | 0 | – |

| RM6,400 | 13,000 | 3,018 | 2,831 | 187 | 187 |
Monthly salary × 12; the same example receipts at every level. Refund = the PCB your employer deducts (without receipts) versus the real tax with receipts — which is why keeping receipts brings money back.
A single employee with no other reliefs starts paying tax at roughly RM3,450 a month for YA2026.
Why the numbers come out this way
Every taxpayer gets the Individual & dependent relatives relief of RM9,000 automatically, and the employee EPF contribution of 11% of salary is claimed under Life insurance & EPF. Your chargeable income — RM23,700 — is taxed on a progressive scale that starts at zero, and the RM400 rebate is deducted when chargeable income is no more than RM35,000. That is why a new employee on a modest salary usually pays very little or nothing.
An employer only deducts PCB when the estimated yearly tax exceeds the minimum; at RM3,200 the monthly PCB is RM0. Even at zero tax, clean records from year one make everything easier once your salary grows — at RM6,400 a month the same situation pays RM2,831 a year even with receipts.
Tips for this situation
- Register your tax file and MyTax account early — see the page on registering a tax file; there is no need to wait until you owe tax.
- Keep Lifestyle receipts (books, phone, internet, sports gear) from year one: the cap is RM2,500 a year and each receipt is worth more as your marginal rate rises.
- Medical check-up & mental health (cap RM1,000) and SOCSO / EIS contributions contributions (cap RM350) are the ones new employees most often forget.
- Check your payslip: your 11% EPF deduction is already a relief with no receipt needed.
How ListBelanja handles it for you
- Pick the “Beginner” persona in the app — Home shows just your first three steps.
- Scan every receipt that might qualify; AI matches it to Lifestyle, Medical check-up & mental health and the other reliefs, with the remaining cap shown.
- Enter your salary and PCB from the EA form once (it can be scanned) — the app works out the tax, rebate and refund, and tells you whether you need to file.

Frequently asked questions
Do I pay income tax on RM3,200 a month?
The YA2026 tax for a single employee on RM3,200 a month is RM0 without receipts (RM0 with the example receipts), after RM13,000 of automatic reliefs and the rebate. Tax starts at roughly RM3,450 a month.
Do I still need to file if the tax is zero?
Registering and filing depend on your yearly income, not on the tax that results — the “Do I need to file?” page explains the thresholds and forms. Filing with zero tax costs nothing, and your receipts are already organised for the year your salary rises.
How much do I get back if I keep receipts?
A refund only exists once PCB has been deducted. At this salary your tax after the rebate is RM0 and no PCB is deducted — no refund, but receipts still matter once your salary rises.
