Which monthly spending counts?
Count the spending you would still have to pay if your income stopped — rent or a home loan instalment, food, utilities, transport, insurance, loan instalments and your children's fees. Wants can be left out because they can be paused.
Keep the emergency fund somewhere safe and easy to withdraw from, separate from your everyday spending account, so it does not get used without noticing.
How many months suit you?
There is no one number for everyone — irregular income, many dependants or a single income in the family usually call for more months. The calculator shows a few month options to compare; pick the one that fits your situation.
In the app, your real monthly spending is worked out from your own records, and the emergency fund goal template suggests a target from that average — the savings are tracked in a real account as transfers, not spending.

Frequently asked questions
Does EPF count as an emergency fund?
Usually not — retirement savings cannot be withdrawn freely at any time. An emergency fund should be money you can reach within a few days.
Should I pay off debt first or build an emergency fund?
Many people build a small fund first so an emergency does not add new debt, then speed up payments on high-interest debt while still adding to the fund. Choose what suits your interest rates and how steady your income is.
