FIRE (financial independence) calculator

FIRE means financial independence and the option to retire early: your assets are big enough to cover your spending without a salary. This finance calculator multiplies your yearly spending by the multiple you choose, then counts the years needed in today's money — return minus inflation.

Five new public money calculators

This FIRE calculator is one of five new free public ListBelanja money calculators, with no sign-up and in three languages. The FIRE calculator multiplies your yearly spending by a chosen multiple (default 25 times, the “4% rule” convention) for your financial-independence number, then works out how many years it takes to get there with your assets, yearly savings and an assumed return, in today's ringgit after inflation. The rent vs buy calculator compares the total cost of renting and owning over the same period; the refinance calculator shows the new instalment, monthly saving and break-even point after costs; the inflation calculator uses DOSM's official Consumer Price Index (a stored copy is labelled with its date); and the future value calculator works out monthly savings with compound returns. Results can be taken into the app to plan with your own records.

How is the FIRE number worked out?

FIRE number = yearly spending × multiple. The default multiple is a popular convention known as the "4% rule" (1 ÷ 4% = 25) — it is not a guarantee and not advice; change the multiple to see its effect.

Years to financial independence are counted year by year: assets × (1 + real return) + yearly savings, where real return = (1 + return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. The default inflation is the average of the Department of Statistics Malaysia's official Consumer Price Index.

In the app: from your real EPF & spending

In ListBelanja, the Retirement & FIRE planner uses the EPF balance you enter, EPF's declared dividends (three paths: low, median, high) and your real 12-month spending from your receipts — not an assumption.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 4% rule suit Malaysia?

It is only a popular starting point. Life expectancy, healthcare costs, inflation and your own investment returns decide a suitable multiple — that is why the multiple can be changed.

Where does the inflation figure come from?

From OpenDOSM's Consumer Price Index (CC BY 4.0 licence), refreshed automatically by ListBelanja's daily data pipeline. The source and latest month are shown under the field.

Are my numbers stored?

No. The calculation happens in your browser; no numbers are sent or stored.
